Let’s be real for a second.
You’ve probably wondered at some point:“Is God even listening?”“Why does prayer feel so hard sometimes?”“What if I don’t pray enough—or say the wrong thing?”
You’re not alone. These aren’t faithless questions. These are human questions. And the Bible gives us more grace-filled answers than you might think.
In Part 2 of this Everyday Prayer series, we’re going to take a breath, break the pressure, and dig into what really keeps us from praying—and what Scripture says about it.
Can You Pray Wrong?
Let’s tackle the elephant in the room: Is it possible to “do it wrong”?
Yes—and no.
No, you can’t mess up prayer if your heart is sincere and your aim is to connect with God.But yes, the Bible does point out some postures and attitudes that can distort prayer:
1. Praying for performance
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (ESV)
Jesus rebuked people who prayed to impress. If you’re more focused on who’s listening around you than who’s listening above you, you’re missing the point.
2. Praying with selfish motives
3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (ESV)
God hears all prayers—but that doesn’t mean He agrees with all of them. Prayer isn’t a tool to get God to endorse our desires. It’s a space to align our desires with His will.
3. Praying without faith
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; (ESV)
📝 Note: Doubt doesn’t disqualify you. But prayer partnered with trust is far more powerful than prayer partnered with uncertainty.
So Why Does Prayer Feel So Hard Sometimes?
Even if you love Jesus and want to grow, prayer can still feel:
Awkward
Dry
Silent
Boring
Like talking to the ceiling
Here’s why—and what to do about it.
Reason 1: You feel unworthy
Maybe you think, “Why would God listen to me after what I’ve done?”
16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (ESV)
Prayer isn’t based on your performance. It’s based on God’s grace. You don’t earn your way to prayer—you’re invited into it.
Reason 2: You don’t feel heard
Silence can be discouraging. But silence isn’t always absence. Sometimes, God is listening more than you know—He’s just working in ways you can’t see yet.
17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. (ESV)
Reason 3: You’re distracted
Phones buzz. Minds wander. Schedules press. You’re not a bad Christian if your mind drifts. You’re a human.
📝 Try walking and praying, journaling your prayers, or setting small focused moments (like 3–5 minutes).
What If I Don’t Know What to Say?
You don’t have to.
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. (ESV)
Sometimes the most honest prayer you can pray is:“God… I don’t even know what to say right now.”
He understands. And the Holy Spirit fills in the gaps.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether. (ESV)
What About Listening?
Here’s a side of prayer we don’t talk about enough:You’re not the only one with something to say.
Prayer isn’t just a monologue—it’s a dialogue. And listening is often where the transformation happens.
Ways God speaks:
Through Scripture
Through a sense of peace or conviction
Through people or situations
Through His Spirit (John 14:26)
Through silence that teaches patience and trust
📝 Sometimes, the reason we don’t hear God is because we don’t give Him a chance to speak. Try pausing. Listening. Waiting.
Prayer Is a Safe Place to Be Honest
You don’t need to sanitize your prayers. The Psalms are filled with raw emotions—anger, grief, confusion, even frustration with God.
“How long, O Lord?” (📜 Psalm 13:1)
“Why have You forgotten me?” (📜 Psalm 42:9)
“My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?” (📜 Psalm 22:1 — the same words Jesus used)
God isn’t intimidated by your feelings. He welcomes them.
You can say:
“I’m angry.”
“I’m tired.”
“I don’t trust You right now.”
“Please help my unbelief.”
Because here’s the thing: God already knows.Prayer isn’t for His sake—it’s for yours.
When You Feel Like Giving Up on Prayer
Here’s the truth: The enemy wants you to believe prayer doesn’t work. He wants to disconnect you from the One who sustains you.
So when prayer feels dry, awkward, or unproductive—press in, not out.
9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. (ESV)
📝 Prayer is a muscle. The more you exercise it, the more natural it becomes. The strength comes from consistency, not perfection.
Final Thought
Prayer isn’t about getting it “right.”It’s about getting real.
God is not a distant authority waiting for you to get your act together. He’s a loving Father who says, “Come to Me—right now, just as you are.”
Even if your prayer is messy.Even if it’s silent.Even if it’s full of doubts. It still counts. It still matters. And He still listens.
Ask Yourself:
Do I carry guilt or pressure when I pray?
What doubts or lies have kept me from praying freely?
Have I given myself space to listen as much as I speak?
