Jesus Warned Us First—And He Wasn’t Vague About It
Of all the warnings Jesus could have given about the end times—global wars, plagues, persecution—His first word of caution was clear and direct: “Watch out that no one deceives you.”
4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. (ESV)
📝 Notice: the deception isn’t coming from the obvious enemies of God—it’s coming in His name. This is the deception that seduces the undiscerning. It wears the right labels, sings the right songs, but preaches a gospel that doesn’t save.
Deception in the last days isn’t about blatant evil. It’s about subtle shifts. Emotional appeals. Compromises dressed up as compassion. It is a counterfeit kingdom where love is redefined, truth is optional, and holiness is offensive.
The vigilant Christian cannot afford spiritual naivety. We are called to see through the smoke, to recognize the schemes of the enemy masked as light.
Why Deception Is So Dangerous
Deception is not effective because it’s an outright lie—it’s effective because it’s a half-truth. A warped version of God’s word that sounds good enough to pass, but is toxic enough to destroy.
14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. (ESV)
📝 Deception will not show up with a pitchfork—it will show up with polished sermons, viral soundbites, and “Christian” influencers who blend Scripture with self-help, New Age teachings, or cultural ideologies.
Here’s where deception creeps in today:
False teachers preaching a powerless Gospel that emphasizes love but omits repentance.
Cultural ideologies disguised as Christian virtue, redefining sin as self-expression.
Churches afraid to preach sin, judgment, or holiness because they want to stay “relevant.”
Christian influencers mixing Jesus with manifesting, energy healing, and universalism.
Governments and media championing anti-biblical ‘virtues’ under the guise of progress.
If you are not deeply rooted in the full counsel of God, you’ll be swayed by whatever sounds righteous—but isn’t.
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. (ESV)
We are in those days. And only the discerning will survive it.
How to Cultivate Discernment in the Last Days
Discernment is not just a spiritual gift—it is a discipline. It’s the ability to hear a popular teaching, a trending message, or a feel-good sermon and ask, “But is it true?”
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (ESV)
If you want to walk in discernment, here’s how to train:
Know the Word Deeply
Don’t just read devotionals—study doctrine. Learn the Scriptures in context, cover to cover. A shallow knowledge of the Bible is a wide-open door to deception.
Stay Submitted to the Holy Spirit
The Spirit of God is the Spirit of truth. Without Him, intellect won’t save you from deception.
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
Test Every Teaching
No preacher, influencer, or author is above scrutiny.
Test the Spirits
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Don’t Chase What Feels Good—Chase What’s True
Feelings are unreliable guides. Let the Word—not your emotions—be your compass.
Ask God for Wisdom—Every Day
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
📝 Discernment is sharpened through consistency. Feed on truth daily, not occasionally.
Loving Truth Is Non-Negotiable
God is not neutral about deception. He warns us that in the last days, many will perish not because they didn’t hear the truth, but because they refused to love it.
10 and with all wicked deception for those who are perishing, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, (ESV)
To love truth means to cling to it when it’s unpopular, to speak it when it costs you, and to refuse compromise even when the world dresses it up in kindness and tolerance.
📝 In this age, faithfulness will look like resistance. To deception. To compromise. To the dilution of the Gospel.
Final Thought
Deception isn’t coming—it’s already here. And it’s not wearing a villain’s mask. It’s wearing a smile, a soft voice, a well-lit stage, and sometimes… a pulpit.
But God’s truth has not changed. And neither can we.
13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. (ESV)
So stay sharp. Stay rooted. Stay submitted to the Spirit. The vigilant Christian knows the voice of the Shepherd—and no counterfeit can sway them.
Ask Yourself:
Where are you most vulnerable to deception right now?
Are you truly equipped to test teachings, or are you relying on popular consensus?
What steps will you take to deepen your discernment today?
