One of the most pressing questions for modern believers is: Whom do we support? Many pastors and teachers insist that Christians are duty-bound to “bless Israel” by offering political, financial, and military support to the modern state. This teaching has become so common that to question it is considered heresy in some circles.

But what does Scripture actually say? When we test this claim against the Word of God, we discover that supporting an unbelieving nation that rejects Christ is not obedience but compromise. The Bible warns us not to align with the ungodly, not to partake in their deeds, and not to confuse political allegiance with covenant faithfulness.

Our responsibility is clear: we must support Christ, His gospel, and His people. To give our allegiance elsewhere is to share in another’s sins.

God’s Warning Against Helping the Wicked

📜 2 Chronicles 19:2

2 But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the LORD? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the LORD. (ESV)

Jehoshaphat allied himself with wicked king Ahab of Israel, and God rebuked him. The principle is timeless: it is not righteous to support those who oppose the Lord. Helping the ungodly invites God’s wrath.

Modern Israel as a state rejects Jesus Christ, blasphemes His name, and codifies unbelief in its laws. For Christians to support such a nation as if it were the covenant people of God is to repeat Jehoshaphat’s error.

📝 God’s people are called to love all men, but not to ally themselves with those who hate the Lord.

Do Not Partake in Another’s Evil

📜 2 John 1:11

“For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

John warns believers not to bless false teachers or share in their work. To offer support to those who deny Christ is not neutrality. It is participation.

When churches send money or political lobbying on behalf of a nation that denies Jesus as the Messiah, they become partners in that denial. This is not the blessing God requires. True blessing is to preach the gospel and call to repentance, not to underwrite unbelief.

📝 To bless someone in rebellion against Christ is to stand against Christ.

The Apostolic Example of Bold Separation

📜 Acts 13:46

46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, saying, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken first to you. Since you thrust it aside and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. (ESV)

Paul and Barnabas preached first to the Jews. When they rejected the gospel, the apostles did not continue to affirm them in unbelief. They turned to the Gentiles, declaring that those who reject Christ judge themselves unworthy of eternal life.

The apostolic pattern is not to honor unbelief but to move on with the gospel. Christians today must follow the same model. Our allegiance is not to unbelieving Israel but to Christ and His mission among the nations.

Why Modern “Support” Is Misguided

  1. It Misunderstands Covenant Identity

Scripture makes covenant blessings conditional on faith in Christ (📜 Galatians 3:16, 📜 Galatians 3:29). To treat unbelieving Israel as still covenant-privileged is to deny the gospel.

  2. It Confuses Political Zionism With Biblical Faith

Zionism is a secular political ideology. It does not confess Jesus. It does not follow the prophets. It is not a fulfillment of God’s promises.

  3. It Diverts Christian Resources

Money, energy, and prayer poured into political Israel could be used to strengthen the church, spread the gospel, and care for the saints.

  4. It Sets Up End-Time Deception

By teaching unconditional loyalty to modern Israel, many Christians are being primed to accept the Antichrist when he comes as a false messiah in Jerusalem (📜 John 5:43, 📜 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4).

📝 To support modern Israel as though it were covenant Israel is to confuse politics with the kingdom of God.

Our True Allegiance

The Bible leaves no ambiguity. Our responsibility is to Christ, His gospel, and His people.

  • Support Christ’s Church

The holy nation of God today is the body of Christ (📜 1 Peter 2:9). We are called to love, serve, and support the saints.

  • Advance the Gospel

Our mission is not to advance earthly kingdoms but to proclaim the kingdom of God (📜 Matthew 28:19–20).

  • Defend Truth

We must stand against lies that twist Scripture and lead believers into deception (📜 Jude 1:3).

📝 Supporting Christ’s kingdom will sometimes look like resisting popular causes. Obedience is measured not by popularity but by faithfulness to the Word of God.

Pastoral Implications

Christians today face a test. Will we follow the crowd that cheers political Israel, or will we follow Christ who calls us to truth? This is not a matter of indifference. It is a matter of allegiance.

  • If we bless what God does not bless, we partake in deception.

  • If we confuse earthly nations with God’s holy nation, we betray our mission.

  • If we give our loyalty to unbelief, we withhold it from Christ.

📝 Faithfulness will cost us. But faithfulness is the only path that leads to life.

Final Thought

The Bible commands us to love all people, including Jews, Arabs, and Gentiles. But it never commands us to give allegiance to unbelief. The modern state of Israel is not the covenant nation of God but a political project that rejects Christ. To support it as if it were biblical Israel is to stand against the gospel. Our responsibility is clear: to support Christ, His church, and His mission to the nations. That is where our loyalty must remain.

Ask Yourself:

  • Have I confused political Israel with biblical Israel in my understanding of prophecy?

  • Am I directing my prayers, resources, and loyalty toward Christ and His people, or toward a nation that rejects Him?

  • Do I have the courage to resist popular teachings that demand allegiance to unbelief?

Why is it so difficult for modern Christians to separate political Zionism from biblical faith, and how can the church return to true allegiance to Christ?
