The Strings You Can’t See

Every word you hear, every headline you read, every sermon you listen to carries a weight that often goes unnoticed: motive. Someone wants something from you. Sometimes it’s harmless like a teacher wants you to learn, or a friend who wants you to be encouraged. Other times, it’s dangerous like a manipulator that wants control, a company that wants profit, a false teacher that wants blind loyalty.

This truth can be unsettling, but it’s necessary for a believer to embrace: behind every message is an agenda.

📜 2 Corinthians 11:14–15

14 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15 So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. (ESV)

📝 Deception rarely shows up wearing horns and a pitchfork. It comes cloaked in credibility, dressed in charisma, and sweetened with half-truths.

Why Motives Matter

The Bible consistently warns us not just to listen to what is said but to consider why it is said. This is the essence of discernment. The Pharisees in Jesus’ day had motives rooted in pride, jealousy, and control. On the outside, their words seemed religious. But their agenda was to secure power and eliminate threats to it... Jesus included.

Jesus exposed them with piercing clarity:

📜 Matthew 23:27–28

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. (ESV)

📝 The Pharisees’ words sounded holy. Their motives were hollow.

The World’s Agendas at Work

Consider three modern arenas where motives regularly shape what we believe:

1. Media

Fear is profitable. Outrage drives clicks. Division boosts ratings. News outlets may not always be concerned with truth, they are concerned with your attention, because your attention funds their advertisers.

2. Marketplace

Advertising rarely sells products—it sells lifestyles, identities, and insecurities. “Buy this, and you’ll be happy.” Their motive isn’t your joy, it’s your dependence on consumption.

3. Religion

Not every pulpit is pure. Some preach prosperity to gain wealth. Some preach fear to gain loyalty. Others soften truth to gain popularity.

📜 Philippians 1:15

15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. (ESV)

Paul acknowledges what we don’t like to admit: even in the church, not every message comes from a pure heart.

The Enemy’s Oldest Agenda

Behind all human agendas lies one greater spiritual scheme. From Eden onward, satan’s strategy has always been manipulation through subtle suggestion.

📜 Genesis 3:1

1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (ESV)

Notice: the serpent wasn’t interested in Eve’s enlightenment. His motive was rebellion. He wasn’t offering truth, he was baiting destruction.

📝 Every earthly agenda that draws you away from God echoes this original deception.

Physical vs. Spiritual Discernment of Motives

  • Physical discernment asks: What’s their angle? What do they gain if I believe this?

  • Spiritual discernment asks: What spirit is behind this? Does this lead me closer to or farther from God?

Both are crucial. If you only evaluate motives physically, you may see manipulation but miss the spiritual warfare beneath it. If you only evaluate spiritually, you may overlook practical red flags of human corruption.

📜 James 3:15–17

15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. (ESV)

God’s wisdom is marked by purity and sincerity. Anything else carries a hidden agenda.

Questions That Unmask Agendas

The next time you encounter a message, ask yourself:

  1. Who benefits if I believe this?

  2. What happens if I don’t believe it?

  3. Does this align with Scripture, or does it contradict it?

  4. Does this message produce peace, humility, and holiness, or confusion, pride, and fear?

📝 Sometimes the message itself is neutral, but the motive behind it reveals its danger.

The Danger of Blind Trust

One of the most common traps is assuming credibility because of status. We trust the celebrity because they’re famous, the leader because they’re eloquent, the preacher because they’re popular. But influence does not equal integrity.

📜 Colossians 2:8

8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. (ESV)

Paul warns: even if the message sounds wise, if its agenda pulls you from Christ, it is empty deceit.

God’s Motive: Pure Love

There is only one voice that speaks without hidden strings, God’s. He doesn’t manipulate, exploit, or deceive. His motive is always love, and His goal is always truth.

📜 John 8:32

32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (ESV)

Unlike the world’s agendas, God doesn’t bind you to fear, He frees you with truth.

Final Thought

Everyone has an agenda. Some agendas are harmless, others are destructive, but only one agenda leads to eternal life: the Kingdom of God. If you want to walk in freedom, you must learn to test every motive and weigh every voice.

Ask Yourself:

  • How often do I pause to consider the motive behind the voices I trust?

  • Do I measure those motives against the purity of God’s Word?
