The War We Don’t Acknowledge
From Eden to Revelation, the human story is marked by a battle not only for hearts and minds but for perception itself. The enemy’s oldest tactic was not brute force, but deception. He didn’t coerce Adam and Eve, he blurred their vision and twisted their hearing. The fall came not by violence but by persuasion.
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (ESV)
The serpent didn’t deny God; he distorted Him. And this same strategy echoes through every age. The war we fight is not primarily about politics, culture, or even morality—it is a war over what is true, and whether we can still perceive it.
16 But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. 17 For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it. (ESV)
📝 Seeing and hearing in God’s kingdom are not just biological, they are spiritual privileges given by grace and sharpened through obedience.
Why Discernment Is So Rare
Discernment doesn’t just require knowledge, it requires humility. To see what is true, you must be willing to confront what is uncomfortable. Most people would rather follow the crowd, trust the loudest voice, or remain numb in distraction.
9 And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ 10 Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” (ESV)
Notice the sequence: ears dulled, eyes blinded, hearts hardened. The tragedy of our age is not that information is scarce, it’s that perception is.
📝 Our devices flood us with more voices than any generation in history. Yet the more we “hear,” the less we perceive.
The Enemy’s Strategy: Blind and Deafen
The god of this world uses subtle tools to capture our perception:
Blind Eyes With Pleasure
Endless entertainment, consumerism, lust, and busyness keep eyes fixed downward. A distracted people is a deceived people.
Deafen Ears With Noise
Constant media cycles, arguments, and opinions drown out the still, small voice of God.
Twist Vision With Half-Truths
Satan rarely denies truth outright; he reframes it, offering benefits without costs, light without depth.
4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (ESV)
📝 If satan can blind perception, he doesn’t need to destroy faith, because faith never takes root.
God’s Answer: Open Eyes and Unstopped Ears
The good news is that God doesn’t leave His people in the dark. Scripture is full of moments when God opened perception:
Elisha and the servant: Surrounded by armies, Elisha prayed for his servant’s eyes to be opened. Suddenly, the servant saw fiery chariots of heaven surrounding them (📜 2 Kings 6:17).
Jesus’ healings: Every blind eye opened in the Gospels pointed to the deeper truth that Christ alone gives spiritual sight.
The Spirit’s work: The Spirit guides believers into truth and reveals lies for what they are (📜 John 16:13).
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. (ESV)
📝 God’s sheep don’t avoid every lie. They endure because they can distinguish His voice from the counterfeit.
Training Our Eyes and Ears
Discernment is not automatic. It is a discipline, trained over time through practice.
Anchor in Scripture
Truth becomes clear when every claim is weighed against the Word.
Practice Stillness
The Shepherd’s voice is easier to hear when the world’s noise is silenced.
Seek Wisdom in Community
Discernment grows when sharpened by others who see from angles you cannot.
Obey What You Hear
Clarity grows through obedience. When we ignore conviction, our hearing dulls.
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (ESV)
📝 Discernment is not a gift for the elite; it is the fruit of constant practice.
Living in the Last Days
Scripture warns that deception will increase as the return of Christ approaches. False prophets, lying wonders, and seductive ideologies will abound. The danger is not just obvious evil, it is near-truth.
24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect. (ESV)
📝 The final deception will not appear demonic, it will appear divine. Only those trained to see and hear will endure.
Final Thought
The series began with the question: Whose thoughts are you thinking? It ends here: Whose voice are you hearing, and whose vision are you trusting? This is the final battle for perception. In the flood of deception, only those anchored in Christ’s Word, filled with His Spirit, and surrounded by His people will stand.
Ask Yourself:
Am I cultivating eyes to see and ears to hear—or am I content to live blinded by noise and distraction?
What rhythms will I commit to daily, weekly, and monthly that sharpen my discernment?
