“I saw the sign…” — and no, I’m not talking about the Ace of Base song from the 90s that might already be stuck in your head. God’s signs aren’t catchy lyrics on the radio; they’re life-giving reminders and holy nudges meant to draw us closer to Him.
The challenge is, we often expect God to speak in dramatic, unmistakable ways: burning bushes, angelic visitations, or thundering voices from heaven. While He can certainly do that, more often He whispers. He shows up in the quiet, the ordinary, and the seemingly insignificant. The real question is: are we paying attention?
God Speaks in Many Ways
The Bible is filled with examples of God speaking in different forms.
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. (ESV)
God used a burning bush with Moses (Exodus 3), a whisper with Elijah (1 Kings 19:12), dreams with Joseph (Genesis 37), visions with Peter (Acts 10), and parables through Jesus. Sometimes His voice was unmistakable, other times it was subtle and easy to miss.
📝 God is not limited to one method. He speaks to us in ways that fit our story, our wiring, and even our stubbornness.
The Subtle Signs We Miss
So how does God often speak today? While we must always test what we sense (more on that later), here are some common ways God shows Himself in the small things:
Thoughts and Impressions – A phrase, idea, or burden that presses on your heart.
Scripture Illuminated – A verse “jumps off the page,” speaking directly to your situation.
People Around Us – A friend’s comment, a stranger’s kindness, or wise counsel that aligns with what you’ve been praying about.
Opportunities Opening or Closing – Doors God gently shuts to protect you or swings wide to lead you forward.
Creation – The heavens declaring His glory (Psalm 19:1). A sunrise, a storm, or even a bird on your windowsill reminding you of His care.
Inner Peace or Restlessness – The Holy Spirit’s nudge giving either assurance or a check in your spirit.
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. (ESV)
God’s people can recognize His voice. But recognition comes with practice, attentiveness, and humility.
Testing the Source
Not every thought that runs through your mind is from God. Some are from your own imagination, some from the enemy, and some from the Lord. That’s why discernment is essential.
1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. (ESV)
Practical questions for discernment:
Does it align with Scripture?
God will never contradict His Word.
Does it reflect God’s character?
If it’s manipulative, condemning, or pride-driven, it’s not from Him.
Does it bear fruit of peace, humility, and love?
Or does it lead to fear, confusion, or destruction?
Was it confirmed?
God often repeats His messages through multiple channels.
📝 Note: The devil masquerades as light (2 Corinthians 11:14). If you don’t test the voice, you may follow a counterfeit.
Why God Uses Small Signs
Why doesn’t God always make it obvious? Because intimacy is built in the listening. A whisper requires you to lean in.
Small signs teach dependence. You learn to wait, ask, and trust.
They build relationship. You’re not just looking for a transaction but walking with a Friend.
They humble us. We can’t demand burning bushes on command. We learn to accept the whisper.
12 And after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper. (ESV)
Elijah didn’t hear God in the dramatic storm. He heard Him in the stillness.
Building a Life That Notices
If you want to see God in the small things, you have to slow down and pay attention. Practical ways to grow:
Start a Prayer Journal. Write what you sense, pray, and track how God confirms over time.
Practice Stillness. Turn off the noise. Five minutes of silence can sharpen your ear to the Spirit.
Stay in Scripture. The more you know God’s Word, the easier it is to filter His voice from counterfeits.
Ask for Confirmation. Pray for clarity, and be patient as God repeats His answer in different ways.
Final Thought
God is speaking more than we realize. The problem isn’t His silence, but our speed and our selective hearing. He speaks in the quiet thoughts, the nudges, the patterns, the verses that strike our hearts.
The everyday signs of God’s presence remind us that He is not far away, but right here, walking with us. The real question is: will we notice Him in the small things, or keep waiting for a burning bush while missing His whisper?
Ask Yourself:
Have I overlooked small ways God may already be speaking to me?
What’s one moment this past week where I may have brushed off God’s nudge as coincidence?
