Money is one of the clearest mirrors of our hearts. How we earn it, spend it, save it, and give it reveals what we truly value. Jesus spoke about money more than almost any other topic—not because He needed it, but because He knew how easily it could compete for our devotion.
📜 Matthew 6:24
24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. (ESV)
Finances are not just practical matters. They are deeply spiritual matters.
The Struggle: Trusting Money More Than God
In a world driven by consumerism, it's easy to view money as security, success, or freedom. Many believers genuinely love God, but when fear, greed, or pride take root, money can quietly become an idol.
Signs money may be taking God’s place:
Anxiety over finances is constant and overwhelming.
Tithing or giving feels impossible, even when income increases.
Life decisions are based solely on salary or status, not calling or obedience.
Contentment feels elusive, no matter how much is earned.
The truth is simple: Money is a tool, not a savior. It will either serve God's purposes—or it will try to replace Him.
The Truth: Stewardship is Worship
Everything we have belongs to God. Our bank accounts, our homes, our groceries, our investments—they are on loan from the true Owner.
📜 Psalm 24:1
A Psalm of David. 1 The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, (ESV)
When we handle money according to His design, it becomes an act of worship:
Earning honestly honors God's truthfulness.
Saving wisely honors God's wisdom.
Spending modestly honors God's call to contentment.
Giving generously honors God's heart of grace.
We are stewards, not owners. And faithful stewardship brings freedom—not bondage.
📜 Luke 16:11
11 If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous wealth, who will entrust to you the true riches? (ESV)
Practical Ways to Honor God with Your Finances
Tithe First: Give the first fruits of your income, not the leftovers.
📜 Malachi 3:10
10 Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need. (ESV)
Budget Prayerfully: Invite God into your financial planning. Don't just budget for expenses—budget for generosity.
Live Below Your Means: Simplicity is powerful. It creates margin to give, save, and serve.
Save with Purpose: Preparing for the future is wise, but saving should be fueled by stewardship, not fear.
📜 Proverbs 21:20
20 Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a foolish man devours it. (ESV)
Give Beyond the Tithe: Look for opportunities to bless others—missions, benevolence, supporting ministries.
Be Honest in Business: Whether in small dealings or major contracts, integrity glorifies God.
Break the Chains of Debt: Avoid unnecessary debt. Aim for financial freedom so you can say "yes" when God calls you to give or go.
Reflection Questions
Where am I tempted to trust money more than God?
How would my finances look different if Christ were my CFO?
Am I living in a way that leaves room for generosity?
A Personal Challenge
This month, prayerfully review your finances with open hands. Ask God to show you:
Where you need more wisdom.
Where you need more surrender.
Where He is calling you to step out in generosity.
Commit to making one intentional change—whether it's starting a budget, setting up a tithe, paying down debt, or giving to a ministry that tugs at your heart.
📜 2 Corinthians 9:7
7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (ESV)
Final Thought
God doesn't need your money. He wants your heart. When we handle money God's way, we declare that He alone is our treasure—our Provider, Sustainer, and King. Let's honor Him not just with our songs and prayers, but with every dollar He entrusts to us.
Ask Yourself:
Am I using money to build God’s Kingdom—or trying to build my own?
