Every believer — no matter how strong — will walk through seasons when God feels far away. The Bible reading feels dull. Prayers feel like they bounce off the ceiling. Your spirit feels tired and numb. This is not a sign that you’re failing. It’s a normal part of growing deeper in faith.
To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. 1 How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me? (ESV)
Even King David, a man after God’s own heart, knew the ache of spiritual dryness. The key is not to run, panic, or quit. The key is to press in — even when it feels hard.
Why Dry Seasons Happen
Spiritual dry seasons can come for many reasons:
Testing of Faith — God allows dryness to strengthen perseverance and purify motives.
Sin and Disobedience — Sometimes our choices create distance from God.
Spiritual Warfare — The enemy often attacks through discouragement and doubt.
Natural Cycles of Growth — Just as trees need winter to prepare for spring, we sometimes experience spiritual “winters” to deepen our roots.
2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. (ESV)
What to Do When You Feel Spiritually Dry
1. Be Honest with God
Don’t fake it. Pour out your frustration, confusion, and longing before Him. He can handle your raw heart.
2. Stay in the Word
Even if it feels dry, the Word is living and active. Keep feeding your soul.
3. Pray Anyway
Prayer isn't about emotional highs — it's about connection. Even a whisper of "Help me, Lord" matters.
4. Worship Through the Wilderness
Choose songs that declare truth, even when you don't "feel" it.
5. Invite Community In
Let trusted believers pray for you, encourage you, and remind you of who God is.
6. Repent if Needed
If sin has dulled your sensitivity, confess it and receive God's restoring grace.
7. Remember Past Faithfulness
Journal or reflect on how God has shown up before. He has not changed.
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (ESV)
Final Thought
Spiritual dryness is not the end of your faith. It’s an invitation to deeper trust. In the desert, roots grow deeper searching for water. In the silence, we learn that God is still good, still near, still worthy. If you're walking through a dry season today, take heart: God has not abandoned you. He is growing something unseen, something beautiful, something lasting.
Ask Yourself:
Are you willing to trust Him even when you can't trace Him?
