If the foundation is weak, the whole building collapses. That’s not just an architectural principle—it’s a theological one too.
Genesis is the first brick in the foundation of the Christian faith. It’s the “ground zero” of everything we believe about God, humanity, sin, salvation, and the destiny of creation. Yet in today’s world—even among some Christians—Genesis is often treated like a myth, a poetic story, or a theological metaphor rather than historical reality.
But here’s the danger: if the opening chapters of the Bible are not literal, everything that follows is called into question. John MacArthur summarized this well:
“If you deny the literal interpretation of the Genesis account of creation, you have undermined every major doctrine of the Bible, including the sovereignty of God, the inerrancy of Scripture, the depravity of man, and the Gospel itself.” -John MacArthur
That’s not hyperbole. That’s truth. And in this post—and the broader series we’re beginning—we’re going to explore why.
What’s Really at Stake with Genesis
Some argue that whether Genesis is literal or figurative doesn’t really affect the core of Christianity. After all, they say, the message of Jesus is what’s most important. But if Genesis isn’t literal, then:
God’s Sovereignty is undermined. If He didn’t create the world as described, is He truly sovereign over it?
The Bible’s Inerrancy is compromised. If Genesis is wrong, where else is the Bible wrong or symbolic when it claims to be literal?
The Depravity of Man is redefined. If Adam and Eve didn’t really fall, where did sin come from?
The Gospel loses its foundation. If there was no real fall, what exactly are we being saved from?
📝 Every essential doctrine of the Christian faith is intertwined with Genesis 1–11. Dismantle that, and the rest wobbles like a house of cards.
The Enemy Has Always Attacked the Beginning
It’s no accident that the very first words satan ever spoke to humanity were designed to cast doubt on God’s Word:
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God actually say, ‘You shall not eat of any tree in the garden’?” (ESV)
That question is still echoed in our culture: Did God actually create the world in six days? Did He really make Adam from dust and Eve from his rib?
This is more than a debate about science or ancient literature—it’s a battle over the authority of God’s Word. If satan can make you doubt the beginning, he can make you doubt everything else that follows.
Why This Series Matters
Over the next several posts, we’ll be diving deep into these interconnected doctrines that hinge on the literal truth of Genesis:
The Sovereignty of God
The Inerrancy of Scripture
The Depravity of Man
The Gospel of Jesus Christ
The Authority of Genesis
We’ll examine how each is rooted in the Genesis narrative, why a literal interpretation matters, and what’s lost if we abandon it. Along the way, we’ll address cultural, scientific, and theological objections and equip you to stand firm on the unshakable Word of God.
Final Thought
Genesis isn’t just the first book of the Bible—it’s the cornerstone of the Christian worldview. Without it, we don’t fully understand who God is, who we are, or why Jesus had to come at all.
If you’re ready to reinforce your faith, build a solid foundation, and confidently defend the truth from the very beginning, stay with us. We’re just getting started.
Ask Yourself:
Have I truly studied the Genesis account, or have I assumed it’s flexible in meaning?
What questions or doubts have I carried about the creation story?
Why does it matter to me personally that Genesis be literal?
