So… Is Following Jesus Just a List of Don’ts?

Let’s be honest. If you’re young and trying to figure out life, it can feel like being a Christian means missing out.

No parties.

No drinking.

No hooking up.

No "fun."

And the world LOVES to make you feel like you’re lame if you don’t jump into all that. But here’s the thing — what the world calls fun? It’s usually just a shortcut to feeling something… anything. But are these feeling truly fulfilling?

📝 Note: A lot of people are laughing on the outside, but they’re completely empty on the inside.

What If the World’s Fun Is Just a Distraction?

It’s wild how fast everything moves.Your feed is full of people partying, flexing, traveling, dating, and doing the most — and it looks exciting, right?

But what you don’t always see is what happens after:

  • Regret

  • Confusion

  • Loneliness

  • Broken trust

  • Numbness

The kind of fun the world pushes usually ends with you feeling more lost than before.

📜 Proverbs 14:13

13 Even in laughter the heart may ache, and the end of joy may be grief. (ESV)

Not all fun is good. Not all excitement is worth the cost.

Real Fun Isn’t Loud — It’s Lasting

Here’s what nobody tells you: You don’t have to party to have a good time. You don’t have to get drunk to laugh. You don’t have to give your body away to feel seen.

God made us to enjoy life — just in a way that doesn’t leave us wrecked afterwards.

Here are some real, solid ways to have fun without the crash:

  • Go on a hike or explore somewhere new

  • Learn to play an instrument or write music

  • Go to concerts, open mics, or local art nights

  • Host a game night or movie night with real friends

  • Travel (even short day trips!)

  • Join a sports league or hit the gym with a friend

  • Make art, crafts, clothes, or furniture

  • Go to coffee shops and actually talk (not just scroll)

  • Serve somewhere and see how good it feels to help

  • Road trip with a playlist and no destination

  • Get into photography, videography, or creative editing

  • Start something you’ve always wanted to try

📝 Note: When you spend time doing things that fill your soul — not just hype you up — life hits different.

Getting Closer to God Changes How You See Everything

Let’s be real. You can’t fake a mindset shift. But something happens when you spend time with Jesus — you start seeing the world differently.

📜 Romans 12:2“

2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)

You stop craving the stuff that used to tempt you. You stop needing to impress people who don’t even know the real you. And you start wanting more out of life than just another weekend story.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about getting closer to the One who loves you most — and letting Him change the way you experience everything.

You’re Not Missing Out — You’re Growing Up

There was a time when staying up all night and making dumb choices felt like freedom.

But then what? You wake up exhausted, anxious, and wondering if any of it mattered.

The truth?

You’re not boring.

You’re becoming wise.

You’re choosing something better.

And yeah — it’s not flashy.

But it’s real.

And real lasts longer than likes, hookups, or fake friends.

Final Thought

If you’ve ever felt like being a Christian makes you “miss out” on life… maybe it’s because you haven’t seen how full life in Christ really is yet.

The more you walk with Him, the more you realize:

  • You’re not missing out.

  • You’re being protected.

  • You’re being prepared for something better.

God isn’t out to kill your fun — He’s trying to show you the kind that doesn’t leave you broken.

Ask Yourself:

  • What kind of fun actually makes me feel whole — not just hyped?

  • Who or what have I been trying to impress?

  • How can I start living with joy and peace at the same time?
