We often think leadership starts on a stage, behind a pulpit, or at the head of the table. But when Jesus bent down and washed the feet of His disciples, He flipped that idea on its head. Leadership in the Kingdom isn’t about rising higher—it’s about going lower. True leadership doesn’t begin with power or prestige. It begins on your knees, with a towel in hand and humility in your heart.
📝 Jesus didn’t demand allegiance—He demonstrated love. And that’s the first step for any believer learning to lead God’s way.
Leadership Redefined
In the world, leaders are celebrated for climbing ladders and commanding influence. But in the Kingdom, leaders are shaped by how well they serve those around them—even when no one is watching.
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (ESV)
📝 Jesus redefined leadership not with a crown, but with a towel. He wasn’t signaling weakness—He was demonstrating divine strength wrapped in love.
His action in John 13 wasn’t just a one-time moment of humility. It was a leadership principle. He wanted His disciples to understand: you’re not ready to lead others until you’re willing to serve them first.
The Obstacle: Pride Masquerading as Leadership
One of the greatest hindrances to godly leadership is pride—often disguised as confidence, ambition, or vision.
Maybe you’ve thought:
“I’m called to lead, not clean up messes.”
“I have too much to offer to be overlooked like this.”
“Once I get the platform, then I’ll be able to serve people.”
But Jesus didn’t wait for applause before He served. He didn’t build His ministry around being seen—He built it around obedience.
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. (ESV)
📝 The starting point for godly leadership is emptying yourself—not proving yourself.
Serving Isn’t Small—It’s Strategic
When Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, He was preparing them for leadership through love, not hierarchy. In fact, the ones He served that night—men full of doubt, betrayal, and fear—would become the ones who carried the Gospel to the ends of the earth.
That wasn’t small work. It was eternal work.
📝 True spiritual leaders don’t just influence moments—they shape destinies through daily faithfulness.
Jesus knew that if His disciples didn’t understand how to serve, they’d never be trusted with who to lead. That principle still stands today.
Humble Leadership That Transforms
We need fewer CEOs in the church and more foot-washers in the Spirit. Real leaders don’t climb over others to reach influence—they stoop down to elevate others into their calling.
The best leaders:
Don’t ask others to do what they won’t do themselves
Show up consistently, even when it’s inconvenient
Care more about God’s glory than their personal success
43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (ESV)
Final Thought
If your idea of leadership doesn’t start with service, it doesn’t start with Christ. Jesus turned leadership upside-down by showing us that the path to greatness begins on the ground. You don’t need a mic to lead. You need a heart that kneels—willing to get messy, willing to go unnoticed, and willing to love first.
📝 Leadership begins at the feet—because that’s where Jesus began.
Ask Yourself:
Where have I sought leadership before demonstrating servanthood?
Who in my life can I begin to serve intentionally right now?
What does it look like to lead “from the feet” in my home, church, or workplace?
