Obedience Is a Journey
If you’re growing in your walk with Christ, you’ve probably felt this internal tension:
“I want to obey God… but I also don’t want to cause division.”“I want to be bold… but I don’t want to be disrespectful.”“What if I get it wrong?”
That’s normal. Growth always involves wrestling. But spiritual maturity doesn’t come from playing it safe — it comes from learning to stand, even when it's uncomfortable.
📝 Note: Following Christ will always make you look different — and sometimes that difference will make you stand out when you'd rather blend in.
In this post, we’ll explore what godly obedience looks like for Christians still finding their footing — when the culture’s rules don’t align with God’s truth.
You’re Not Weak — You’re Learning
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (ESV)
Spiritual strength isn’t automatic. It’s trained.
So if you’re still trying to figure out how to respond to unjust laws, cultural pressure, or anti-biblical teachings — don’t panic. That tension you're feeling is proof that you’re growing.
The goal isn’t to become loud or aggressive. The goal is to become clear and unshakable.
📝 Note: Jesus never rushed His disciples into maturity. He walked with them, corrected them, and trained them to see through deception.
You’re in training too.
A Growth Path for Godly Resistance
Step 1: Know the Word
Before you can stand on truth, you need to know what truth actually is.
Start with key passages like Romans 13, Acts 5, Daniel 3, and Matthew 10.
Ask: What does this say about obedience to man vs. obedience to God?
Study Jesus' interactions with religious and political leaders — He was firm, but never needlessly combative.
Nun 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (ESV)
Step 2: Clarify Convictions
Write down what you will and won’t compromise — based on Scripture, not emotion.
Examples:
I will not deny biblical truth to gain approval.
I will not affirm things God has called sin.
I will not remain silent when the gospel is being silenced.
📝 Note: You don’t have to be a theologian to have conviction — just a believer who’s serious about truth.
Step 3: Start Small, Stay Consistent
Boldness isn’t always big. Sometimes it looks like:
Not laughing at the inappropriate joke
Not sharing the trendy post that glorifies sin
Gently speaking truth in a conversation, even if your voice shakes
📝 Note: God doesn’t expect perfection, but He does expect progress.
What to Do When the Pressure Hits
When the government, your workplace, or even family tells you to do something you know contradicts God’s Word…
Ask:
Does this violate Scripture or my conscience before God?
Is this a matter of preference… or of obedience?
Am I afraid of dishonoring God — or just afraid of being disliked?
If the answer is that it violates truth, then you must obey God over man.
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men. (ESV)
This isn’t always easy. You may lose opportunities, relationships, or respect. But you will gain spiritual strength that can’t be bought any other way.
When You Fall Short — Get Back Up
Growth means you won’t get it right every time. You might stay silent when you should speak. You might go along with something you regret later.
Don’t let that failure define you. Let it teach you.
16 for the righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity. (ESV)
📝 Note: Growth-minded Christians don’t pretend to be perfect — they repent quickly and keep going.
You’re Not Alone
Every believer who has ever stood strong had to start somewhere.
Peter denied Jesus… and later died for Him.
Moses ran from Egypt… and later led a nation out.
Esther was afraid to speak… until she realized she was born for that very moment.
God doesn’t call the already-bold — He makes His people bold through obedience.
12 if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us; (ESV)
Final Thought
Obedience in a compromised culture doesn’t start with defiance — it starts with devotion. As you grow in your walk with Jesus, you will gain the strength to stand, the wisdom to discern, and the love to endure whatever the world throws at you.
Don’t rush your boldness. But don’t delay your obedience either. You’re not just learning to stand for truth — you’re learning to stand with Christ.
And He never stands alone.
Ask Yourself:
Where am I still unsure about what obedience looks like in today’s culture?
What steps can I take to deepen my convictions and strengthen my courage?
Who in my life models godly resistance in a way I can learn from?
