The News No Longer Reports Reality. It Creates It.
Most people believe the news exists to inform them. That era ended decades ago. Today’s news does not simply tell you what happened—it tells you what to think about what happened, how to feel about it, and what conclusions you must reach if you wish to align with the approved narrative.
The news has become the sermon of the secular world.
The anchors have become the priests.
The networks have become the pulpits.
And the worldview being preached is shaping the spirit of a generation.
17 The one who states his case first seems right, until the other comes and examines him. (ESV)
The news makes sure the “other” voice is never heard.
📝 We no longer live in an age of information. We live in an age of narrative.
The Spiritual War Behind the Airwaves
Scripture teaches that influence flows from the unseen realm into the visible world. If satan is the “prince of the power of the air,” then it should not surprise us that the most powerful tool of mass influence operates through the airwaves themselves.
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— (ESV)
The news shapes:
• National moods
• Cultural outrage
• Political loyalties
• Social fears
• Moral values
• Emotional climates
And it does all of this with the same strategy the serpent used in Eden:
partial truth mixed with selective omission wrapped in persuasive presentation.
📝 Sin deceives because it obscures truth. The news deceives because it filters it.
Fear Is the News Industry’s Most Effective Weapon
If fear disappeared from the world today, the largest media corporations would collapse.
Fear is the fuel.
Fear is the hook.
Fear is the product.
Fear keeps viewers watching.
Fear keeps citizens compliant.
Fear keeps culture divided.
Fear keeps the world unstable enough to be controlled.
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. (ESV)
The spirit behind the news is not the Spirit that comes from God.
The result?
A spiritually anxious society:
• afraid of one another
• afraid of the future
• afraid of leaving the narrative
📝 Fear is not just an emotion. It is a doorway. And the news opens it daily.
Division: A Feature, Not a Flaw
We live in a world where disagreement is no longer part of civil discourse—it is a threat to identity. The news does not aim to unify. It aims to polarize.
Why?
Because unity ends anger.
Anger ends viewership.
Viewership ends profit.
Profit ends power.
The serpent understands something many do not:
A divided people are easier to manipulate than a discerning people.
25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. (ESV)
So the news manufactures division:
• left versus right
• race versus race
• class versus class
• tradition versus progress
• citizen versus citizen
The news does not report sides. It creates sides.
📝 If the enemy can divide you, he can distract you. If he can distract you, he can deceive you.
The Illusion of Objectivity: How Bias Becomes “Fact”
Every news network tells itself the same lie:
“We are neutral.”
Neutrality ended when truth stopped being a priority and influence became the goal.
The news creates narratives by controlling:
• What stories are told
• Which details are included
• Which details are hidden
• Who gets to speak
• How often something is repeated
• What emotional tone is used
• What language frames the issue
Truth is no longer discovered.
It is constructed.
14 Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands far away; for truth has stumbled in the public squares, and uprightness cannot enter. (ESV)
The public square has moved from physical space to digital broadcast—and truth is still stumbling.
📝 The greatest deception is not what you are told. It is what you are never allowed to hear.
Manufactured Crises: Turning Emotion Into Agenda
Many crises are real. Many tragedies are legitimate. But the news industry has perfected the technique of turning real events into narrative weapons.
This happens through:
• Repetition designed to inflame
• Emotional framing designed to provoke
• Selective editing designed to persuade
• Commentary designed to indoctrinate
• Strategic omissions designed to control
A crisis that lasts a week can dominate the mind of a nation for years if the news chooses to keep the wound open.
6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. (ESV)
The news profits when you are alarmed.
The Kingdom thrives when you are not.
📝 The world is discipled by fear. Believers are discipled by truth. Only one of these produces clarity.
Information Without Wisdom Creates Spiritual Blindness
We live in a generation drowning in information but starving for wisdom.
The news gives information in overwhelming volume but offers no wisdom to interpret it.
And without wisdom:
• Fear becomes normal
• Outrage becomes identity
• Confusion becomes certainty
• Lies become believable
• Truth becomes offensive
6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. (ESV)
Not lack of data.
Lack of discernment.
Wisdom filters information.
Discernment interprets motives.
Truth exposes deception.
The news does the opposite.
It keeps people informed enough to be anxious but ignorant enough to be influenced.
📝 Information shapes the mind. Wisdom shapes the soul. The news only cares about the former.
Why Christians Must See Through the Manufactured Reality
You cannot fight deception if you cannot recognize it.
You cannot recognize it if you trust the sources that distribute it.
We are not called to be uninformed.
We are called to be discerning.
21 but test everything; hold fast what is good. (ESV)
Testing the news means:
• Questioning the narrative
• Comparing claims with Scripture
• Identifying emotional manipulation
• Recognizing spiritual agendas
• Avoiding fear based consumption
• Refusing to let the culture disciple your worldview
The news is powerful because people trust it.
The deception is effective because people absorb it uncritically.
📝 The enemy does not need to silence truth if he can simply drown it out.
Final Thought
The news is no longer a window into the world. It is a lens crafted by spiritual forces that understand how powerful perception is. What people believe shapes how they live. What they fear shapes how they submit. What they are told shapes what they fight for and what they abandon.
To unmask the great deception, we must unmask the voices that shape reality itself.
The world is not as the news portrays it.
It never has been.
And unless we remain vigilant, we will allow voices crafted by deception to speak louder than the voice of God.
The truth is not found in screens, headlines, or broadcasts.
The truth is found in the Word.
And the Word exposes every false narrative by shining a light the news cannot control.
Ask Yourself:
• Do I let the news shape my emotional life more than Scripture does?
• Have I absorbed fear or division from media without realizing it?
• Am I discerning the spirit behind the information I consume?
