It’s easy today to approach faith like consumers. We pick churches based on what they offer. We listen to sermons like customers rating a product. We scroll through devotionals, choosing only what feels good in the moment. But Jesus didn't call us to be spiritual shoppers. He called us to be disciples.
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (ESV)
Spiritual maturity demands more than consuming Christian content. It calls for deep surrender, daily obedience, and a life centered on Christ — not ourselves.
Signs of a Consumer Christian
Consumer Christianity often shows up subtly. Signs include:
Prioritizing convenience over commitment — “I’ll go to church if it fits my schedule.”
Seeking emotional highs instead of steady growth — “If I don’t feel something powerful, it must not be real.”
Measuring churches by entertainment value — “The worship was boring” / “The message wasn’t exciting enough.”
Avoiding hard teachings — “I want inspiration, not conviction.”
Viewing faith as something to "use" rather than something to submit to.
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, (ESV)
What a Mature Believer Looks Like
Mature believers live differently:
Faithfulness over feelings — They stay rooted even when emotions waver.
Service over self — They look for how they can give rather than just receive.
Hunger for truth over comfort — They welcome correction, challenge, and growth.
Obedience even when it’s costly — They live not for convenience but for Christ’s glory.
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil. (ESV)
How to Grow from Consumer to Disciple
Transformation happens through intentional shifts:
Commit to a local church — Not as a critic, but as a servant.
Dig into Scripture daily — Even when you don’t "feel" like it.
Embrace the hard parts of the Gospel — Repentance, sacrifice, humility.
Ask God to show you where selfishness has crept in — And be willing to change.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (ESV)
Growth Step: Ask yourself: Where am I more of a consumer than a disciple? Then pray, "Lord, mature me. Make me hungry for You, not just for what You give."
Final Thought
The Christian life isn’t about what we can get from God — it’s about giving our lives fully to Him. Jesus didn't die to make us comfortable. He died and rose again to make us alive. It’s time to move beyond consuming and step into the adventure of true discipleship.
Ask Yourself: Are you ready to go deeper?
