Raising children is one of the greatest privileges—and greatest responsibilities—God entrusts to us. Our culture offers countless opinions on parenting. But if we want to raise children who know and love Christ, we must build our homes on something deeper than trends, feelings, or convenience.
6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (ESV)
Faith isn’t meant to be a Sunday event. It’s meant to be the heartbeat of our homes.
The Struggle: Outsourcing Faith
Modern life is busy. It’s tempting to believe:
Church will teach them about God.
Christian schools will train them in truth.
Youth groups will handle their spiritual growth.
But no ministry, no program, no school can replace parents discipling their own children.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. (ESV)
Faith-filled parenting is not about perfection. It’s about presence, intentionality, and authenticity. Your kids don’t need a perfect example. They need a real one.
The Truth: Faith is Caught More Than Taught
Children learn by what they see, not just what they hear.
They notice:
How you treat your spouse.
Whether you pray about hard things.
If you prioritize Scripture or entertainment.
Whether church is an obligation or a joy.
How you respond to stress, success, and suffering.
We disciple our children every day, whether we realize it or not. The question is: what are we discipling them toward?
Practical Ways to Raise Kids in a Faith-Filled Home
Model a Real Relationship with Jesus: Let your kids see you pray, worship, repent, and seek God genuinely.
Make God's Word Central: Read Scripture together. Talk about it naturally throughout daily life.
Pray With and For Them: Prayer shouldn’t just happen at mealtimes. Pray about decisions, fears, hopes, and dreams.
Celebrate Growth, Not Just Performance: Cheer on spiritual fruit (kindness, patience, honesty) more than just achievements.
Involve Them in Ministry: Serve together. Show them faith isn’t just believing—it’s loving in action.
Create Rhythms of Worship and Rest: Sabbath together. Sing together. Celebrate God's goodness together.
Be Honest About Struggles: Show them faith isn’t about pretending to be perfect—it’s about clinging to Christ.
Reflection Questions
What do my daily habits teach my children about God?
Where am I modeling faith well? Where do I need to grow?
How can I weave faith more naturally into everyday life?
A Personal Challenge
This week, choose one intentional step to deepen faith at home:
Start a simple family devotional.
Establish a new prayer habit together.
Share a personal testimony with your kids about God’s faithfulness.
It doesn't have to be elaborate. Consistency > Complexity.
15 And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” (ESV)
Final Thought
Children don’t just inherit our genes. They often inherit our faith—or our lack of it. May our homes be places where grace is lived, truth is spoken, and Jesus is loved above all. Let's raise the next generation to know not just about God—but to know Him personally, powerfully, and passionately.
Ask Yourself:
What habits, attitudes, or priorities in my home are shaping my children’s view of God?
Am I unintentionally outsourcing my child’s spiritual growth to others instead of leading by example?
What’s one small, consistent habit I can start today to make faith the heartbeat of our home?
