In our culture of hustle and grind, rest can feel almost rebellious.Busyness is praised. Exhaustion is normalized. Productivity is idolized.

But from the very beginning, God wove rest into the fabric of creation. And He didn’t suggest it—He commanded it.

📜 Exodus 20:8-10

8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. (ESV)

Sabbath isn’t just about taking a nap or having a lazy Sunday. It’s about trusting God enough to stop.

The Struggle: Rest Feels Unnatural

For many of us, rest doesn’t come easy.

  • We feel guilty when we’re not working.

  • We measure our worth by our productivity.

  • We fear falling behind if we slow down.

  • We stay busy to avoid confronting deeper heart issues.

📝 Underneath the endless activity is often a lack of trust—trust that God will sustain, provide, and fulfill His promises without our nonstop striving.

Choosing Sabbath means choosing faith over fear.

The Truth: God Created Us for Rhythms of Rest

Rest was God's idea.

📜 Genesis 2:2-3

2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. (ESV)

God didn’t rest because He was tired. He rested to delight, to celebrate, and to set an example for us.

We are not machines. We are image-bearers—designed for work and worship, labor and laughter, productivity and peace.

When we practice Sabbath, we declare:

  • God is God, and we are not.

  • Our value is in being His children, not human "doings."

  • The world doesn’t fall apart when we step back—because He holds it together.

📜 Mark 2:27

27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (ESV)

📝 Sabbath is a gift, not a burden.

Practical Ways to Practice Sabbath

  • Set Aside a DayChoose a day each week to slow down intentionally. If Sunday isn’t feasible, pick another.

  • Prepare AheadFinish work, errands, and chores beforehand so you can truly rest.

  • Disconnect DigitallyUnplug from social media, emails, and endless scrolling.

  • Worship and ReflectSpend extended time in Scripture, prayer, and worship without rushing.

  • Enjoy God's Good GiftsTake a walk. Share a meal. Laugh with friends. Create something beautiful. Rest doesn’t mean isolation or inactivity—it means restoration.

  • Rest Guilt-FreeRefuse to feel guilty for doing what God Himself invites you to do.

Reflection Questions

  • What keeps me from truly resting?

  • How would trusting God with my time change the way I view rest?

  • What would a life shaped by Sabbath rhythms look like for me?

A Personal Challenge

This week, schedule a true Sabbath day.Not just "a day off" filled with errands—but a day of worship, restoration, and delight in God.

Ask:

  • What activities feed my soul and point me toward Christ?

  • What activities drain me and need to pause?

Create space to remember: you are loved, not for what you do, but for who you are in Christ.

📜 Hebrews 4:9-10

9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. (ESV)

Final Thought

Sabbath is not a rule to trap you. It’s a rhythm to set you free.

In resting, we mirror our Creator. In ceasing, we proclaim our faith.

Let’s be countercultural Christians who aren’t afraid to slow down—who declare by our rhythms that God is enough.

Ask Yourself:

  • What’s one area of my life where I’m resisting rest because I’m afraid of falling behind?

  • How can I start practicing Sabbath in a way that honors God and restores my soul?

  • What does “delighting in God” look like for me?
