When Following Christ Costs You Everything
The True Call to Discipleship

The First Step: Becoming Unshakably Bold for Christ
When Following Christ Costs You Everything
Modern Christianity often markets faith as a way to a better life: more blessings, more peace, more success. But Jesus never promised comfort. He promised a cross.
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (ESV)
Following Christ isn't about gaining the world. It’s about being willing to lose it — and still declaring Jesus is enough.
The Cost of True Commitment
Following Jesus has always carried a cost.
For the early disciples, it meant leaving careers, families, and safety.
For many believers throughout history, it has meant persecution, imprisonment, even death.
For us today, it might mean rejection, ridicule, lost opportunities, strained relationships.
20 Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. (ESV)
Comfort was never the goal. Christ is.
Why the Cost Is Worth It
It may feel like following Christ costs everything. But what we gain is infinitely greater:- We gain peace that the world can’t give.
We gain eternal life that the world can’t touch.
We gain intimacy with the King of kings.
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ (ESV)
The temporary losses we face for Christ cannot compare to the eternal glory we will share with Him.
Preparing Your Heart to Pay the Price
If we don’t settle the matter in our hearts now, we’ll crumble under pressure later. Here’s how to prepare:
Anchor yourself in Scripture daily — Truth must be your foundation.
Pray for boldness, not ease — Ask God to strengthen your resolve.
Expect opposition — Don't be surprised when it comes.
Fix your eyes on eternity — Remember, this life is not the end.
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. (ESV)
We aren’t living for applause here. We’re living for the crown waiting there.
Examples of Costly Faith
Stephen — the first martyr, stoned for proclaiming Christ (Acts 7).
Peter — crucified upside down, refusing to deny his Savior.
Countless unnamed believers — who gave their lives, reputations, and freedoms so that the gospel could continue.
The legacy of the Church is written in sacrifice. Will we be faithful in our chapter?
Challenge for Today: Reflect on what you would risk or lose for Christ. Pray for the strength to hold fast — no matter the cost.
Final Thought: Christ Is Worth It
The world may strip away your status, your comfort, even your life. But it can never take Christ from you.
38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (ESV)
Jesus isn’t looking for admirers. He’s looking for followers willing to carry a cross. Will you be one of them?
Ask Yourself:
What comforts, relationships, or ambitions am I clinging to more tightly than Christ?
Have I truly counted the cost of following Jesus — or am I still bargaining for ease?
Do I live in a way that shows the world Christ is my treasure, even when it costs me something?
