Leadership isn’t glamorous. It’s costly. If you think following Christ into leadership means comfort, applause, or easy influence—you’re not following the real Jesus.
📝 Kingdom leadership will cost you your pride, your preferences, and often your peace. But what you gain in Christ is infinitely more valuable than what you lose in the world.
Leadership Requires Sacrifice
The very nature of godly leadership is self-denial. You will carry burdens others don’t see, fight battles others never notice, and give more than you often receive.
23 And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (ESV)
📝 You can’t carry the cross and your ego at the same time.
When God calls you to lead, He’s also calling you to surrender. Leadership may cost you:
Time and rest
Comfort and control
Reputation or popularity
Friendships or approval
Opportunities to retaliate
Criticism Is Part of the Call
Every true leader will be misunderstood. Jesus—the perfect Leader—was mocked, betrayed, and crucified. How much more should we expect hardship?
22 and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. (ESV)
📝 If you’re leading for Christ, expect resistance from the world—and sometimes even from within the Church.
You may be falsely accused. You may be questioned unfairly. You may even be abandoned. But the call remains: lead anyway.
Don’t Confuse Resistance with Rejection
It’s easy to internalize opposition as failure. But often, resistance is a sign you’re on the right path.
12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, (ESV)
📝 If you’re never opposed, it may be because you’re not confronting the darkness.
Leadership isn’t about keeping people happy—it’s about keeping your heart aligned with God, even when others walk away.
The Cost Is Real—But So Is the Reward
The pain is real. The tears are real. The sacrifice is real. But so is the reward.
18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (ESV)
📝 You may lose things in this life for leading well—but you gain eternal glory.God sees it. He counts it. And He will repay it.
Jesus Paid the Highest Cost First
Don’t forget: Jesus bore the full cost of your sin before He ever asked you to lead in His name.
You’re not suffering alone—you’re sharing in His sufferings.
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. (ESV)
📝 Every scar you earn for His name becomes a badge of eternal honor.
Final Thought
If leadership hasn’t cost you anything yet, it probably hasn’t truly begun. But when the cost comes—don’t quit. You’re in good company. The prophets paid it. The apostles paid it. Jesus paid it in full.
📝 Leadership that costs nothing changes nothing. But leadership that costs you everything will change eternity.
Ask Yourself:
What am I afraid to lose by saying yes to leadership?
Have I counted the cost of following Jesus—not just as a believer, but as a leader?
What eternal reward keeps me grounded when the pain of leadership feels overwhelming?
