We talk a lot about growing in Christ, but what does that actually look like?

Is it a feeling? A switch you flip? A baptism that erases every trace of who you used to be?

For many of us, spiritual growth doesn’t come in loud, dramatic ways—it comes in the quiet tension of learning to think differently, live differently, and carry yourself differently… even when the people around you refuse to see it.

Let’s talk about what real growth looks like. The kind that leaves your past behind and your identity in Christ shining through. The kind that humbles itself to change—and the kind that discerns who hasn’t changed, no matter what they say.

Growth Isn’t Just Possible—It’s

Expected

If you’re following Jesus, growth is non-negotiable.

The Holy Spirit doesn’t come to decorate a dead life. He comes to resurrect it.

📜 2 Corinthians 5:17

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (ESV)

📝 That “old” you? The addict, the liar, the bitter heart, the party life, the angry kid, the confused thinker, the one with zero boundaries or too many opinions—that version of you died. But sometimes the world doesn’t get the memo.

You’re Growing—But They’re Still Watching the Reruns

Here’s a hard truth: People will remember who you were long after you’ve forgotten.

They’ll bring up your old mindset, your old language, your old mess-ups—even the ones you repented of and deeply regret.

Why? Because people are slow to accept change. Especially in others. Especially when your growth shines a light on their stagnation.

📝 You may be evolving, but they’re still attached to the version of you that makes them feel better about not changing.

Don’t be discouraged. Even Jesus said a prophet has no honor in his own hometown (📜 John 4:44). If He wasn’t recognized for who He truly was, what makes you think everyone will recognize the new you right away?

Yes, You Can Think Differently Now

Growth means permission to evolve.

You are allowed to believe things now that you didn’t believe before.

You are allowed to see things differently than you used to.

You are allowed to say, “I was wrong back then.”

📜 Romans 12:2

2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. (ESV)

📝 Transformation starts in the mind.

Renewing it is not weakness—it’s obedience.

Don’t let the fear of “flip-flopping” keep you from embracing Spirit-led maturity. Opinions shaped by God’s Word are evidence of submission, not instability.

It’s Okay to Outgrow Old Mindsets and Still Love the People Who Knew the Old You

There will be tension when you grow.

You’ll look back on old conversations and cringe. You’ll see your old posts and sigh. You’ll interact with people from your past and feel that awkward silence when they realize: You’re different now.

You don’t have to explain everything.

You don’t owe anyone a TED Talk about your transformation.

But you do owe Christ your consistency.

Let your life preach louder than your defense ever could.

📜 Matthew 5:16

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. (ESV)

But Don’t Be Naive—Not Everyone Who

Says They’ve Changed Has

Now comes the other side of discernment:

As you mature, you’ll start noticing people who talk the talk of growth but still walk in the same fruitless patterns.

📝 Growth is not just language. It’s fruit.

📜 Matthew 7:16

16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? (ESV)

People will say they’ve matured. That they’re different. That they’re following Christ now. And maybe they want to. But don’t be afraid to test the fruit.

  • Is their speech different?

  • Are their habits changing?

  • Are they humble, teachable, and accountable?

  • Do their relationships show the presence of the Holy Spirit?

📝 You’ll usually know within a few interactions. The real ones show change in the little things. The fakes use “grace” as a costume and keep living the same.

Your Growth Doesn’t Need Their Permission

Let’s be blunt: Some people won’t believe you’ve changed unless it benefits them.

You don’t need their validation.

You don’t need their approval.

You don’t even need their applause.

Your growth is between you and the God who’s reshaping you from the inside out.

He sees it. He’s proud of it. And He’s not asking anyone else to sign off on your transformation.

📜 Philippians 1:6

6 And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. (ESV)

So grow. Learn. Repent. Heal. Evolve. And do it all in the light of Christ, not the shadow of someone else’s memory.

Final Thought

Spiritual growth isn’t always celebrated—but it’s always worth it. You’re not bound to who you were. God delights in your progress, even when people doubt it. Keep renewing your mind, transforming your habits, and walking forward in truth. Be gentle with your past, bold in your present, and watchful for false growth in others. You’re not who you used to be—and that’s the point.

Ask Yourself:

  • Have I allowed myself to fully embrace the growth Christ is producing in me?

  • Am I carrying shame from who I was, even though I’ve changed?

  • Am I discerning real growth in others, or just listening to their words?
