Walking the Pieces: The Covenant That Foretold the Cross
Walking the Pieces is a deep dive through one of the most mysterious yet foundational passages in all of Scripture: the covenant ceremony in Genesis 15. Ancient readers understood that to “cut a covenant” meant to seal an unbreakable bond in blood. The lesser party walked between the torn pieces of sacrificed animals, declaring, “If I break this covenant, let me become like these pieces.”
But Genesis 15 breaks the pattern.
Abraham prepares the animals and expects to walk the blood path. Instead, God places him into a deep sleep. Darkness falls. A dread sweeps over him. Then God Himself appears as a smoking fire pot and flaming torch and walks through the pieces alone. This act signals a unilateral covenant of grace where God takes full responsibility for its fulfillment, even if humanity fails.
Across six core posts and an optional seventh, the series:
• Explains the ancient covenant ritual and why God used it
• Reveals the prophetic significance of Abraham’s deep sleep
• Unpacks the stunning reality that God alone walked the pieces
• Confronts the truth that humanity broke the covenant
• Shows how Jesus, the Lamb of God, was torn to fulfill the curse clause
• Teaches how believers live today as covenant people formed by grace
Walking the Pieces reveals that the cross was not an afterthought. It was anticipated in Genesis 15. God swore that if the covenant was broken, He Himself would bear the curse. At Calvary, He did.
This series is for believers who want to understand covenant theology, see Jesus more clearly in the Old Testament, and live from the identity that comes from a God who walks the pieces.
